They function as an independent dwelling, complete with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living area. An accessory dwelling unit can serve various purposes such as a guesthouse, rental unit, separate living or working space, or a pool house.

Conversely, a room addition involves expanding a single-family home's primary structure to create more living space. These projects are typically undertaken to enlarge a kitchen, family room, or master bedroom, or to introduce an additional bedroom and/or bathroom. Room additions may also include the construction of a second or third story.
